We visit an Ice Racing event in Sherbrooke, Quebec and discover European cars dominating the opposition.
You can read about our adventures in the May 2008 issue of eurotuner magazine but, to whet your appetite, we visited the Challenge Sur Glace in late February 2008.
The event is now in its tenth year and features a track carved from the snow, which is piled into high banks to define the course and protect competitors and spectators alike.
Sponsored by Continetal Tires, it features the latest mid-engined all-wheel drives racecars, but there are also support races that include motorcycles, ATVs and even horses!
Several teams came from France to compete, bringing a BMW 1-Series hatch, Fiat Grande Punto and Citroen C2 teams. All feature mid-mounted V6 engines and use all-wheel-drive to psuh power to the studded Continental ice tires.
A local competitor was using a B5 Audi S4 in the race and we had the chance to ride along side the driver, 63 year-old Henri Alder. You can see in-car video footage from this ride in our online video section very soon (if it’s not there, check back in a few days).
Sadly, the Audi retired from the main race, which was won by visiting French team – the Stievenart father and son combination in their T3F-class Fiat Punto with mid-mounted 3.0 V6 Toyota power. They finished ahead of the BMW 1-Series in second place.
Considering the hordes of Mitsubishis and Subarus they were up against, it was a great showing for the Euros!
