We were fortunate to attend the final day of the X-Games 14, held as before in the LA Galaxy's soccer stadium. For this event, the grass is replaced by tons of mud as an impromptu rally course is created inside the stadium. Cars had to negotiate a figure-8 in the stadium before one car would crest a mud bank, spectacularly leaping over the second rally car. Both then climb mud ramps to leave the stadium and run identical courses in the parking lots.
The courses are almost identical on either side of the stadium, with the cars swapping sides to ensure each covers the same distance. In so doing, the second car tackles the jump before leaving the stadium again. Both cars then return to the stadium to cross the line. At least, that's how it's supposed to work... In one race, the only Mitsubishi Evo in the finals, driven by Andrew Comrie-Picard, made a great start against his rival, Dave Mirra in a Subaru Impreza STi. the NOS Energy Drink Evo took an early lead in the stadium section but didn't seem to carry enough speed to clear the jump. The front tires touched down, as did the floor of the car, causing it to bounce. The nose then pitched forward, dug into the soft mud and the car flipped onto its roof before coming to rest on its wheels. Picard and co-driver Jen Horsey were unharmed. Meanwhile, Mirra had damaged his steering after hitting a concrete wall and was unable to turn left. However, he doggedly completed the course to qualify for the semi-finals, only to crash out in the next round after landing badly and sliding into a concrete wall. Videos of the Evo crash are all over the internet but we managed to catch this photo of the Evo as it flipped in mid-air. The second semi-final was decided before the flag dropped. Ken Block's Impreza refused to start after it suffered radiator damage during a heavy landing over the jump. That left Travis Pastrana and Tanner Foust to battle it out in the final. The race, and the gold medal, was won convincingly by Pastrana after Foust hit the wall on a number of occasions, losing momentum and the race.
