We just got our hands on a Beta version of the upcoming Motorstorm video game for the PlayStation 3. Although it wasn’t fuly developed, the tracks we raced seemed flawless.
If you know the game already from the first version, nothing much has changed. It’s stillthe same frantic offroad action across unbelievably harsh terrain in a variety of vehicles.
What’s changed is the location. It now takes place in the lush jungles of the tropics.
Developed by Evolution Studios, this version incorporates smarter and more aggressive artificial intelligence (AI), real-time track deformation – allowing you to create deeper ruts each lap, fully destructible vehicles and environments, plus stunningly detailed scenery. In addition to the established MotorStorm gameplay, players will also experience more tracks and vehicles to choose, as well as extensive multiplayer options, including four-player split-screen and races with expanded online action.
The vehicle line up includes a new monster truck class in addition to ATVs, rally cars, buggies, motorbikes, race trucks, mudpluggers, and big rigs – more than enough to keep you entertained. Each has its own characteristics and the new physics-based car damage means players will break and destroy a vehicle’s parts and panels during collisions with other drivers as well as with objects in the environment. During particularly harsh impacts, we actually saw the wheels and panels falling off the vehicle as it tumbles in slow-mo. However, it’s more or less restored when the vehicle returns to the track. Hit a wall without crashing and the doors start to flap, hoods fly off, etc.
Not only must players try to win the race but also survive against the other racers. Combative racing takes center stage as the vehicles become weapons. Special moves allow you to ram the opponents but don’t expect the AI not to react. Get too tough and it will come looking for you.
The AI analyzes the race and surroundings, reacting in the most realistic manner possible. Not only will the competition try to win the race at all costs, but the AI will react to situations realistically, such as locating the best routes and changing the level of driving aggression based on your actions.
The jungle landscapes, deep water and incredible jumps make the game visually stimulating. And the addition of a turbo boost button means you can make up lost time. But use it too often and the motor blows apart.
With its frantic speed and chaotic action, Motorstorm is best enjoyed with others, either in multiplay or online. Check it out when it launches later this year.
