Despite being touted as the “green car of the year”, the BMW 118d is no longer the company’s most fuel-efficient car. That honor now falls to the new 116d – the marque’s most fuel efficient and least polluting vehicle.
With a combined consumption figure of 64.2mpg and a CO2 emissions figure of 118g/km, the BMW 116d even trumps the highly-regarded BMW 118d.
Available in both three- and five-door guises in Europe, the 116d is powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine producing 116hp. The 1995cc powerplant boasts 192 lb-ft of torque from 1750rpm, ensuring it’s capable of a 0-62mph time of 10.2sec (10.3sec for the five-door), going on to a top speed of 125mph.
While much is said about BMW’s flagship M models, let’s not forget the company is leading the way in alternative fuel and engine efficiency as well. Through its Efficient Dynamics program, BMW has also introduced many weight-saving measures, such as plastic and carbon fiber body panels, aluminum suspension components and even magnesium engine blocks. It has also developed systems such as regenerative braking and electrical systems that shut off when not in use.
Whether we will ever see a 64mpg BMW for sale in the US remains uncertain, but who knows what the future will bring?
