Project 135i: Suspension Update

We’re quite lucky to be one of the first brave souls to modify the new BMW 135i in the US. After receiving a pre-delivered car from BMW of North America, we’ve had to wait patiently for parts to become available as well as be the first guinea pigs to try some parts first.

One of such examples is the H&R Street coilover and sway bar package. Last month we noticed our factory sway bar end-links had broken off the front suspension. These pieces link the sway bar to the struts.
Once we discovered the problem, H&R was quick to offer their customer service and technical troubleshooting. After scanning through our installation photos, they noticed our struts weren’t installed correctly. The struts weren’t indexed properly. It doesn’t take much to install a strut in the wrong position as a mere millimeter can cause the suspension to become unaligned. So because the struts weren’t indexed properly, this in turn caused the end-links to be slightly bent. Instead of the end-links moving up and down during driving, they are bent left and right. And once one breaks, the other side will inevitably break.
Turn Motorsport in Amesbury, MA has kindly sent us a pair of its new adjustable sway bar end-links. It’s similar grade equipment to parts used on Turner’s race cars so we’ll have the strongest out there. These end-links sell for $155.99 and are a direct replacement.
While we’re under the car, we’re going to replace the front springs as our 135i sits too low for daily driving. We’ll have an update later this week after the install.
