I'd be willing to bet that when you think of the Gumball 3000 you're not envisioning 4 doors, a hatchback, and a trunk full of groceries. And to be perfectly honest with you, neither was I. A Bugati Veyron, yes. Bentley Continental GT, absolutely. Ferrari F430, Porsche GT3RS, Rolls Royce Drophead, Mercedes SLR, Jaguar XJ220, yes, yes, yes, uh huh, and oh yeah. So why are we in a 2008 Audi A3 2.0T? The better question is "why not?". The Gumball 3000 is near the top of my Bucket List, the A3 was in the driveway, the opportunity presented itself, and well, I didn't even think about the alternative answer.
It's barely 9:00 on March 2nd, the first actual driving day of the 2009 Gumball 3000. After last nights happenings, I'm surprised to see so many familiar faces smiling and enjoying breakfast at the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica. Don't get me wrong, hangover or not there's plenty to be smiling about, and for every toothful grin behind a plate of bacon and eggs, I guarantee there's two others, smile upside down, wishing they had not closed down the bar. Outside the front doors there's 119 vehicles that would make any kid happy in a game of "my car", and one that your mother would take to the grocery store. I just finished the last bite on my plate, the smile is ear to ear, and I'm off to take as many photos as I can before the 11:00 Driver's Briefing.
So as I make my way out of the restaurant and over to the line of cars stretching down Ocean Blvd., I am already thinking of multiple ways to fill these pages over the next 8 days between Los Angeles and Miami. Check back here over the next week for photos, videos, and more words sharing as much as I can of this "Grocery Getter Goin Gumball'n".
