As you will know from an earlier blog, Derek Jenkins may have left his position as Chief Designer in America with Volkswagen to join Mazda, but that doesn’t mean he’s turned is back on the cars he loves.
When we first met Derek he was driving a Porsche 911, but traded that in for the highly modified VW GTI featured in eurotuner magazine and found at eurotuner.com In his spare time, Derek has also been working on a project of his own, and we recently gathered to celebrate its maiden voyage at a casual Sunday morning car meet in Calabas, CA. Despite the rare and exotic machinery on display, the Buggy made an immediate impact. At least it did until the jet-powered concept car built by GM for Jay Leno arrived. Jay wore ear defenders to preserve his hearing with the jet only inches behind him.

As the large crowd dispersed from Mr Leno’s attraction, many returned to gaze at the carbon fiber-clad Buggy that sits at waist height. It incorporates plenty of modern touches, such as its Lamborghini paint, Ducati fuel cap, Yoshimura muffler and a carbon floorpan. The vehicle is currently powered by a 1720cc air-cooled engine, but it appeared to have lost compression in one of the cylinders on its first time out. However, Derek was undeterred and is already working on a larger replacement engine as we speak. Although eurotuner magazine concentrates on water-cooled VWs (as well as BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Mini, Volvo, Saab, etc) we can’t resist bringing you a full feature on this exciting machine. So keep reading eurotuner for our studio photos and the full story behind this remarkable Buggy.
