Drive - Movie Review 2011

A slow-paced film: poor car chases; gratuitous violence; long, awkward silence.

Surely a European car would be an ideal get-away car… Like James Bond’s Aston Martin, Transporter’s BMW or Ronin's Audi to name a few great alternative cars and movies to watch. But instead, Ryan Gosling's character chooses a Chevy Impala with a "300hp engine".

Ok, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “The Town” almost made a Chevy Town & Country minivan look cool, so maybe our bowtied hero car in “Drive” can change our minds. But with speeds barely making it past 40mph and parking under a bridge to lose an LAPD chopper make it hard to believe.

To top it off, we have no idea if the getaway was a success because he just parks the car a few blocks later, crooks in the back, and walks past the cops that are chasing them.

The next 30-40 minutes would be a great time to visit the snack bar or bathroom because it gets uncomfortable and awkward with a lack of dialog between Mr Gosling and love interest Carey Mulligan’s character, Irene. In fact, the support actors have had more lines then the lead at this point. Trust us, you'll want to choose an Icee flavor instead of trying to wrap your head around how he scores the girl with a couple glances and four words.

The four words he does say are “I drive for movies.” So naturally there's a behind the scenes look at the Driver’s day job. Cool –– so why is he moonlighting as a getaway driver and auto mechanic? Stunt drivers must make more then a driver for smash ’n grabs?

Also, another side note, why is this movie ruining its own movie-making magic by showing a marginal car stunt, that’s barely better than the opening sequence?

Some things just don’t make sense, like how Ryan gets his heart broken later by the girl, becomes friends with the just-out-of-prison husband and turns into a babysitter for their child. Sorry what happened? I wasn’t at the snack bar, so why are there so few words on each actor's script? The turn of events come as a complete surprise, making it hard for the audience to embrace either character’s love connection.

However, the new friendship with Irene’s husband leads to another job to solidify the safety of the family from the problems her husband brought home. Yes, more action!

The scene is pulse-pounding and surprising with a few good drifts and a J-turn. But the consistency of the driving scenes turns it south. The robbery happens in the San Fernando Valley, but the car chase is on a mountain road by the grapevine. The road switches from four lanes to two lanes, smooth asphalt to cracked, to a single-lane mountain pass, all in one sequence. The editing is shockingly poor.

There's also a weird Nascar scene to introduce the star to the mobster who are his eventual demise. However, the lack of basic research here is similarly embarrassing. The poor editing in the 10sec action scene and the references to fiberglass and tire treads on a slick-shod, metal-paneled racecar is plain idiotic.

If you’ve made it this far, you’re in for a shock. Ryan’s character starts talking and acting like a thug. He finally takes charge when he tries to find out who set them up. It turns into an ultra-violent bloodbath with B-movie style over-the-top effects. Turning your snack-filled tummy on its head for no reason but to be disgusting. Again, this  seemed pointless but gives punctuation to the tedium of the other scenes.

Once everybody is killed, you’ll be dumbfounded to discover the driver leaves the stolen millions next to a dead mobster, who was the last one to know about the money... leaving Irene by herself without a husband.

Nobody wins in this film, not even the audience. With only 2.5 driving scenes, this movie isn't worthy of the hype and lacks the attention to detail for car-chase enthusiast.

If you're still inclined to watch this movie, check out the trailers for all dialog portions and rent some of the aforementioned flicks. No, we didn't enjoy the movie – it's hyped as an car chase action movie but it's actually a snoozefest.
